Espuela Grande

Aaron behind the wheel of his MGF, it has proved to be popular on the channel.

In a previous blog I mentioned that this is not the only place that I produce and publish regular content. I am the other half of the Youtube channel Espuela Grande (EG Media) which I work on alongside automotive journalist Aaron McKay. I shoot and edit the content whilst he writes and presents it. The idea started a few years ago at the pub (as all good ideas start) with the two of us discussing how we could combine my skills with a camera with his passion and enthusiasm for cars. With some brainstorming it quickly branched out to a bigger idea that became the channel.

The Saab 9-3 is one of the modern cars we have covered. Sadly with the demise of the company we will never get a chance to review a successor.

A lot of current car content online focuses either on reviewing cars in a technical way (how practical it is, and what mod cons it comes with etc.), talking about buying and selling, or on driving the big-ticket options; Ferraris, Porsches, Aston Martins and so one. All the cars that we would love to own even if we can only afford to use the free configurator on a company’s website.  The aim for Espuela Grande was to focus more on the joy of driving itself whatever set of wheels you own, and to more widely target the demographic of younger car enthusiasts. The videos we have posted so far are mostly road tests, from the pre-war MG PA all the way to modern cars like the Fiat Punto Evo and the Saab 9-3. There is a great range already no matter what you are interested in.

Our oldest one yet! Driving a pre-war car like this MG PA is certainly not a simple task but Aaron breaks down how if you have not done so before.

We do have other content, from driving the EVO Triangle to visiting well known car shows and we will continue to branch out with our Road Reviews series which has just kicked off with the B660. With this we aim to raise awareness of the great roads on your backdoor and show that you do not always have to drive to Scotland or Snowdonia to have fun on four wheels. The aim, no matter where you live or what you own, is to get out on the road and simply enjoy driving.

Even my own car has received the Espuela Grande treatment. I have enjoyed owning it and you will understand why once you have seen the video.

Producing the content has certainly been a learning curve, looking back at our first videos from 2019 and comparing it to our most recent ones is somewhat amusing. That is not to say the early content is bad, but it is heartening to see how much we have improved, and I hope to continue to do so in 2021. While it has not been easy to get content recorded with all the restrictions we have faced and are facing right now, we do have plenty of ideas on how we can keep going and are preparing ahead to what we can do later in the year. If we do not see you on the road then we will see you on the channel!

You might not think a Rover 75 estate would make for a good driving car but you would be surprised how well this goes down the road. One of the great last hurrahs for what was an iconic British brand.
